Prince Edward Island is small, and that changes how marketing works. Charlottetown, Summerside, Stratford, Cornwall and Three Rivers are the main communities, and in a province this size, your reputation reaches people before your ads do. For a new trades owner, that is mostly good news: do excellent work, be easy to reach, and the island will talk about you.
The local market for a new trades owner
Most work for a new owner comes from referrals and repeat customers. Online marketing still matters, but its job is different: it confirms what people heard about you, rather than introducing you to strangers.
That means your Google profile and a small website should be accurate, current and honest. A homeowner who hears "call [Your name], they did our deck" will search for you. If they find a verified profile with real photos and reviews, they call. If they find nothing, they may call the next name they hear.
Seasonal and cottage properties are part of the market too, which can create spring opening and fall closing work for some trades.
Climate and seasonality
Winters on the island bring plenty of snow and cold, though the water all around PEI takes the edge off the worst of it. Heat pumps are the primary heating system in many homes, and oil is still common.
Heating-related trades are busy as the weather cools, and many homeowners are weighing upgrades. Outdoor trades work a shorter season and should book early. Seasonal properties can bring a burst of work at the start and end of summer. Plan quieter months around reviews, photos and planning, as our first-year DIY plan describes.
Bodies to know when starting out in PEI
These are the official organisations a new PEI trades owner should know. Contact them directly for licensing and compliance questions.
- Business registration: the PEI Business / Corporate Registry.
- Trade certification: PEI Apprenticeship.
- Inspections and technical licences: the province's Inspection Services, which covers areas such as plumbing, electrical and propane. Plumbing companies need a Plumbing Contractor's Licence, and boiler and pressure vessel work needs a Mechanical Contractor Licence.
- Workers' compensation: the Workers Compensation Board of PEI.
- Consumer protection: PEI Consumer Protection.
Only list services you are licensed for, and display licence details the way the province describes them.
Programs worth knowing if your trade touches heating
Program status changed a lot in 2026, so check before you mention anything to customers. As of October 2026, the official efficiencyPEI page says its free heat pump program is closed to applications, and the residential heat pump equipment rebates ended on 2026-04-15.
A federal-provincial agreement announced in June 2026 expands PEI's free insulation program for income-qualified homeowners. Send customers to the official pages, and do not promote a rebate as available unless the administrator confirms it.
A worked example for a Charlottetown starter
Say you are a new carpenter in Stratford. You list Stratford, Charlottetown and Cornwall as your service area. Your first jobs come from friends, family and a former employer's overflow.
After each job, you ask for a review and leave a note for a few neighbours. Within a few months, people start saying "my neighbour recommended you" and "I saw your reviews." Your call log shows referrals and reviews working together, which is exactly how a small market should work.
How we would approach marketing in PEI
For a first-year PEI owner, we would usually suggest:
- Register your business and confirm licensing for your trade with the province.
- Set up and verify your Google Business Profile, focused on the communities you serve.
- Make reviews and referrals a habit from day one, using our first 20 customers guide.
- Keep everything current; on a small island, outdated information gets noticed.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need a licence to do plumbing work in PEI?
PEI requires a Plumbing Contractor's Licence for plumbing companies, and other trades such as boiler, elevator and propane work have their own licences. Check with the province's Inspection Services for your situation; we do not give licensing advice.
Is Google really useful on an island where everyone knows everyone?
Yes. People hear your name from a neighbour and then look you up. A verified profile with real photos and a few reviews confirms you are the person they were told about.
Should I serve the whole island?
Only if the jobs pay for the drive. Many owners start around Charlottetown, Stratford and Cornwall, or around Summerside, and widen their area as work grows.
