Where we work

Starting out as a trades business in Manitoba

Manitoba has one of the longest heating seasons in southern Canada and most of its population in and around Winnipeg. A new trades owner should check certification and licensing with the provincial bodies, then build a profile and reviews that stand out in the Winnipeg market.

Manitoba is a winter province. Its heating season is among the longest in southern Canada, and that shapes demand for almost every trade, indoors and out. Most of the population lives in and around Winnipeg, with smaller centres such as Brandon, Steinbach, Winkler, Portage la Prairie and Thompson serving wide areas.

The local market for a new trades owner

Winnipeg is the main market and has plenty of established competitors, so a new owner needs to look credible online quickly. A complete Google profile, real photos and a few early reviews make a noticeable difference to whether a stranger calls you.

Outside Winnipeg, markets are smaller and more relationship-driven. In communities such as Steinbach or Winkler, a recommendation from a supplier, a church group or a neighbour can matter as much as a search result. That makes the warm-list and neighbour routines in our first 20 customers guide especially useful.

Climate and seasonality

Long, very cold winters mean heating-related work is in demand for much of the year, while the outdoor season is short and busy.

If your trade is heating-related, start reminding past customers about maintenance in late summer, with their consent, before the rush. If you work outdoors, use January to March to book spring jobs, collect reviews from last season and update your website. Indoor renovation trades often find winter a good time for interior projects, so promote those when exterior work stops. Our first-year DIY plan has a seasonal table.

Bodies to know when starting out in Manitoba

These are the official organisations a new Manitoba trades owner should know about. Ask them directly about licensing, permits or compliance.

Show any licence or certificate you hold on your profile and website in the exact words the issuing body uses.

Programs worth knowing if your trade touches heating

As of October 2026, Efficiency Manitoba's air source heat pump rebate is open for qualifying cold-climate heat pumps in existing primary residences. Manitoba also signed the first Canada Greener Homes Affordability Program agreement in September 2025, with Efficiency Manitoba delivering no-cost retrofits to eligible households.

If your trade is involved, send customers to Efficiency Manitoba to confirm eligibility and amounts. Do not advertise a rebate as certain; programs change.

A first-month checklist for Manitoba

If you are starting out in Manitoba this month, work through this list before spending any money on advertising.

  1. Confirm your business name with the Companies Office and use it everywhere: invoices, vehicle, profile.
  2. Check with the right provincial body whether your trade needs a licence or certificate to work and to advertise.
  3. Get a phone number that takes texts, and record a voicemail with your callback time.
  4. Create your Google profile and list the Winnipeg neighbourhoods or towns you really serve.
  5. Write down every past customer and contact who might send you work, and reach out to each personally.
  6. Decide what you will promote in the coldest months, before they arrive.

How we would approach marketing in Manitoba

For a first-year Manitoba owner, we would usually suggest:

  1. Register with the Companies Office, then set up your Google Business Profile.
  2. Ask every customer for a review from the start, especially if you are competing in Winnipeg.
  3. Plan the year around the long winter: decide early which jobs you will promote in each season.
  4. Use DIY coaching if you want a strategist checking your progress through your first winter.

Frequently asked questions

Who licenses electricians and gas tradespeople in Manitoba?

In Manitoba that sits with the Office of the Fire Commissioner, under its inspection and technical services work. Ask that office what your trade needs; licensing advice is outside what we do.

Where do I register a business name in Manitoba?

With the Manitoba Companies Office. Register before setting up your Google Business Profile so the names match.

Should I market only in Winnipeg?

Winnipeg is where most searches are, but Brandon, Steinbach, Winkler and Portage la Prairie are worth considering if you live nearby. Choose a service area you can reach quickly, and expand it only once you have steady work.
